In an effort to jointly celebrate Literacy Week, Valentine's Day, and the one hundredth day of school, our school held a "Snuggle Up and Read" event for the primary classes.
Invitations went out to parents of all the primary students to join their kids at school that morning. We packed up pillows and favourite stuffies and everyone wore their slippers and jammies to school. All the kindergarten through grade three classes met in the gym. Teachers taped up reading charts on the wall and put out bins of books to share, students scurried in circles around the gym until they found their parents and siblings, moms and dads set up cozy reading corners with pillows and blankets and stuffies from home. And we all got down to reading.
For each book each child read, they got to colour in a Valentines heart on their class chart. The goal was one hundred books read per class by the end of the morning. (A hundred days of school...a hundred books...a hundred hearts...Valentine's Day...get it?)
Such a fun idea. The kids had a blast, and I was amazed at how many parents were there in the middle of the morning in the middle of the work week to share the day with their children.
