It's easy - and tempting - to just plop some ready-to-serve pre-packaged something in front of them to fill them up, but with a little planning it's just as easy to serve something healthy at the one time of day children are so hungry they're guaranteed to eat anything you place before them.

"Treats" are just fine every now and then as long as you're not serving junk food every day. If you're putting out cookies, add some grapes and apple and orange slices; if they have leftover Easter or Halloween goodies to finish, let them pick one to eat with their oatmeal and berries. But kids can be convinced that almost anything is a treat as long as it's a little different - even healthy foods.

Try chopping up the veggies into little heart shapes. Use cookie cutters and a sprinkle of cinnamon and nutmeg to turn whole grain toast into "gingerbread man" toast. Or try spreading peanut butter on a whole grain wrap and rolling it around a banana.
